When I was eight years old, I wrote a story about Harold the Hedgehog. He always got into trouble, just like me. I showed my stories to my second grade teacher. She told me that I was a "budding author". From that day on, I knew I would be a writer.
I kept a journal throughout high school and wrote on the school newspaper. I majored in English in college with a focus on writing. When I graduated from college , I married the Navy and each place the Navy took me, I got a job writing or editing on newspaper and magazines. Sometimes, I took the job without pay just to gain the experience!
Then I had kids and put everything on hold- well almost. I took the Writing for Children and Teenagers course at the Institute of Children's Literature, but quit after my sixth lesson. I blamed "life" for quitting, but something kept nagging at me- I had to write!
I wrote and submitted my work for four years before my first article was published in Skipping Stones magazine. It was a nonpaying market, but the letter I received from the editor confirmed that maybe, just maybe I had some writing talent. So, I pressed on, writing and submitting. I received many rejections, but over the years those acceptances have added up. I published over 100 stories and articles with magazines such as Highlights, Boys' Life, Crinkles (staff writer for two years), Hopscotch, Fun For Kidz and many more.
Then, I decided to start my own magazine- Wee Ones Children's Magazine in 2000. With the help of my husband, we launched our first issue in March 2001. We were the first, paying online children's magazine and we kept it up and running for eight years.
In October 2001, I received a job as instructor with the Institute of Children's Literature. I was to teach the magazine course, but in 2002, I wrote and published two books for Chelsea House. I moved on to the Writing for Children and Teenagers course which focused on both magazine and book writing.
Since then, I've published over 23 books for children and teens. My first picture book, The Falling Flowers was published by Shens Books in 2005. Today I still teach at ICL as well as our local Christian high school. I am the yearbook adviser and creative writing teacher. I am also the new editor in chief for Guardian Angel for Kids e-zine AND I continue to write and submit to magazines and book publishers.
My kids are now teens- they sure do grow up fast but continually give me ideas to write about!
